I used to be a "conventional"
therapist. Clients liked me and came to weekly sessions
for years and felt supported by me. I was always a "good"
therapist (at least that's what most of my clients said)
and I guess I was because I was rarely "fired" by the
people who sought my services.
But
there was a bit of a problem... As much as I loved "helping"
people, I never truly saw anyone get totally
over a trauma or a phobia. I saw my clients learn better
how to cope with their problems, but not totally
overcome them.
I was also a bit of a "snob"
about the type of therapist I was. I had received excellent
and formal training from a psychoanalytic institute
and I truly believed that the method I learned was the
best method.
So, when I began
to learn some of the newer, more innovative methods
of trauma and phobia reduction or resolution, such as
Emotional Freedom Techniques
(EFT), and Traumatic
Incident Reduction (TIR), I was very
skeptical that they would work! They seemed "too easy"
because people didn't have to be in therapy for years.
They seemed too "hocus pocus" because they involved
"tapping" on the face, or rolling the eyes and humming,
or repeatedly telling about the trauma in a session
longer than the conventional 50 minutes.
How did I get
over my skepticism? Personal Experience!
I had a couple
of sessions of TIR and EFT for myself! And issues that
had plagued me all of my life that "conventional" therapy
hadn't helped just disappeared!
My first TIR
session took just 90 minutes. A memory that had "run"
my life since I was three years old just disappeared!
And then I tried
an EFT session on something that had been bothering
me for six years. After seven minutes, the "thing"
that I had suffered with for six years no longer
bothered me!
Vanished! Both
issues were no longer issues for me.
Well, I decided
it was time to reassess my psychotherapy practice. I
could no longer sit and just "listen" to clients talk
for years and years about their same issues. I had to
offer them these new techniques (that some of my colleagues
still scoff at) because I thought I could help my clients
get positive results faster than by the more "conventional"
methods I had been using.
And it worked!
People I had seen for years in therapy now needed just
a few sessions to get over the challenges that had brought
them to me in the first place.
It's a bit lonely
for me now, because most people only feel a need for
a few sessions, rather than years of therapy!
But that's ok
with me. My goal is to help people as quickly as possible.
My goal is to save my clients as much time, energy,
and money as I can.
If someone wants
to make an appointment to work on one simple phobia
or one trauma, that's ok with me. I don't need to take
six months to learn the person's history to help him
or her. I quickly assess if the client is appropriate
for short-term work (and some people are not). And if
the client is appropriate for such an intervention,
I explain the techniques and we get to work!
I would never
give a "guarantee" of results, of course, but many people
meet their goals in just a few sessions with me.
It makes me
very happy to see my clients "graduate" from my office
so quickly.
